Joseph and his wife Ann appear on the 1841 census for Langley Upper Green, both aged 70. Also in the household are two children, Alfred aged 10 & Rebecca aged 6, presumably grandchildren.
Joseph appears again in 1851 as a widower aged 85 and is listed as a pauper agricultural labourer. He is living with his daughter and son-in-law, Hannah and Thomas Rogers, and three grandchildren, Alfred, a shepherd aged 20, Emily aged 10 and Ann aged 7, all born in Langley.
